Public campaign kicks off to select typhoon name after 'Haiyan', deadliest on record, was removed
The China Meteorological Administration has launched a public campaign in which people can vote for their favorite typhoon names after “Haiyan” was removed from the list.
The administration’s website has provided a list of 30 names. Each person can select three of the 30 names. After voting concludes, the winner will be added to the list of typhoon names.
The name will be announced at the end of October. People can go to http://www.cma.gov.cn/2011xzt/2014zt/20140901/index.html to vote. One lucky voter will win an iPhone 6.
The Typhoon Committee of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and The World Meteorological Organization removed “Haiyan” from the list of typhoon names last year.
Typhoon Haiyan hammered the Philippines last November, killing at least 6,300 people. It was the deadliest typhoon on record in the country.
