Public complains as barricades put up around sitting areas

AN east China city has come under fire after it put up barricades around sitting areas around the railway station square in order to stop travelers from lounging around.

Officials in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province, accused train travelers of destroying the environment and damaging the city's image, www.jxnews.com.cn, a local news portal, reported yesterday.

The move triggered an outpouring of anger over the authorities' lack of humanity following the notorious Guangzhou case in which the city used concrete spikes to prevent vagrants from sleeping under overpasses.

In Nanchang, pictures showed steel railings, about 1-meter high, placed around sitting areas in the city's railway station square.

Many travelers had to sit on their baggage beside the railings to rest while others simply ignored the signs reading "Do not climb" and still sat down, the report said.

The online community has come out mostly against the move, with posters arguing on microblogs "the city tried to polish its image, but ironically, only succeeded in tarnishing it."

A netizen identified as Xiaoxianzai said the station lobby wasn't big enough to accommodate so many passengers, thus people had no choice but to wait outside in the square, the report said.

"The authorities and officials care less about normal people and that is why they are so indecent," a microblogger identified as Cao Junshu said on Weibo.com.

Netizens have called on authorities to remove the railings around the sitting areas so people can sit down and rest after their long journeys.
