Public to cash in on anti-terror campaign
THE Ministry of Public Security has promised substantial rewards for those who provide information in the “People’s War” on terrorism.
The rewards will be commensurate with the value of the information in preventing terrorist attacks or catching suspects, it said, adding that the actual amounts will be decided by local police according to their financial situation.
Authorities in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region have announced a rewards “ceiling” of 500,000 yuan (US$80,000), while in Yunnan Province the maximum payout is 200,000 yuan.
In the city of Shenzhen, however, there is no limit.
The public can provide information in person to police or via the 110 hotline, letter, email or text message.
“The anti-terror fight must combine the forces of both professionals and the public,” said An Weixing, director of the ministry's anti-terror bureau.
A total of 32 terror cells have been busted and more than 380 suspects apprehended in west China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region since a yearlong nationwide anti-terror operation began on May 23.
During the period, police received more than 400 tip-offs which led directly to 11 terror cells, one religious extremist group and the capture of more than 80 suspects.
The ministry also promised to protect informants and police officers will be punished if they are harmed.
