Punishment for 25 after chemicals kill gang

TWENTY-FIVE people have been punished in connection with the illegal disposal of hazardous chemicals which resulted in the deaths of four people in east China’s Shandong Province, the Ministry of Environmental Protection announced yesterday.

In October, Zhang Linde and Chen Jixin hired a tanker to take liquid chemical waste to an abandoned coal mine in Zhangqiu, according to the ministry.

Zhang, Chen, the tanker driver and a person in charge were later found dead at the mine, along with a dog.

The waste was from the Shandong Jincheng Heavy Chemical Industry Co Ltd, according to a report in the Jinan Times, which quoted police as saying the four had probably inhaled toxic gas released by a chemical reaction.

More than 170 buckets containing waste sulfuric acid were found.

Police said they also found 320 buckets with around 80 tons of chemical waste at another abandoned mine in Ma’an Village.

They said the cost of treating the waste legally would have been between 3,000 yuan (US$483) and 6,000 yuan a ton, but illegal disposal cost just 260 to 320 yuan.

Five companies in Shandong were found to have paid the gang to illegally dispose of have their waste, the ministry said.

The companies have been closed down and ordered to rectify irregularities before resuming operation, according to the ministry.

Police are tracking other people involved in the case who are still at large, it said.

The ministry gave no details of the punishments already meted out.

The polluted areas have been sealed off while workers from the local environment agency carry out decontamination work.
