Pupils hurt in school crush on staircase

EDUCATION officials are probing a mass stampede at a primary school where dozens of students were injured in southwest China's Chongqing city.

The accident occurred around 3:20pm on November 25 when two grade-1 pupils running upstairs were overwhelmed by senior pupils flooding downstairs at Central School in Sangzhe Town, Pengshui County, today's Chongqing Evening News quoted an unnamed parent as saying.

Dozens of pupils were injured and five seriously, the parent said.

Headmaster Xie Guangxing denied reports of a stampede, though he admitted there was a crush on the staircases after some pupils fell down.

An unidentified teacher told the newspaper all the injured pupils are out of hospital except one who is being kept for observation.
