Pupils trampled to death in rush down stairway

SIX children were killed and 26 injured in a tragic accident at a primary school in southwest China yesterday afternoon.

Two of the injured are in a serious condition in hospital, according to the city government in Kunming.

The incident at Mingtong Primary School happened after a nap around 2:30pm, when children were going down the stairs in the school’s dormitory building.

Some children caused two mattresses to fall on top of their fellow pupils.

Others who were unaware that anyone was underneath the mattresses stepped on them and chaotic scenes ensued.

Several children began to rush down the stairway, with some falling and being trampled on by those following close behind.

The deaths of the six children, all in grades one and two — meaning that they were likely just 6 or 7 years old — were announced by Lu Jia, vice head of the city’s Panlong District.
