Qinghai water supplies healthy due to green outlook
A STRICT commitment to environmental protection measures has helped to bolster water resources in northwest China’s Qinghai Province, authorities claim.
Over the past 15 years, water resources have been steady above 70 billion cubic meters, far more than the average of 63 billion cubic meters in previous decades, the Qinghai Provincial Water Resources Department said in a statement.
Liu Xining, director of the department, attributed the growth to environmental protection measures, but said climate change had also contributed to the situation.
Qinghai, which is located in the northeastern part of the sprawling Qinghai-Tibet plateau, is the source of many of the country’s major rivers, including the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang, and is regarded as an important area, which influences the overall environment, Liu said.
The province has adhered to high standards of water resource management, and many policies have been adopted to save water, he said.
Qinghai used 2.6 billion cubic meters of water last year, less than the target of 3.7 billion, he said.
