Quack books banned

CHINA'S General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) has halted the publication of 104 health care books, saying many self-proclaimed experts dupe readers with their pseudoscientific methods.

"Phony doctors and so-called experts have been writing books and misleading the public by spreading their unscientific health care methods for some time," said GAPP chief Liu Binjie.

In a case last year, Zhang Wuben, author of "Eat Out the Disease You Have Eaten," claimed mung bean can cure nearly every disease. His theory convinced so many people that the price of mung beans was driven up in Beijing.

However, Zhang's claim to be a senior nutritionist was denied by the Ministry of Health. His health care theory was dismissed by experts, and his clinic, which demanded a 2,000-yuan (US$310) registration fee, shut down.

Last October, the GAPP urged publishers to check their health care books and set up a certification system for publishing in this category.

"It is our responsibility to ensure that the country's health care publications are scientific and beneficial to the people," Liu said.
