Quake interrupts national entrance exam in Xinjiang
THE National College Entrance Examination was forced to suspend for a while in Toksun County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region as a 5.3-magnitude earthquake jolted the area at 9:53am today.
Two major aftershocks measuring 4.2 and 4.1 on the Richter scale struck the area again at 9:54am and 10:00am, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center, Xinhua reported. No casualties or damages have been reported so far.
The 841 students who were sitting for the college entrance exams in two venues in Toksun County were quickly evacuated to the open-air sports grounds, China National Radio reported today.
The local education authorities allowed the test takers to rest for 30 minutes to calm themselves down before returning to the classrooms to finish the exam.
The exam was extended for 90 minutes and 70 minutes respectively at the two venues. No aftershocks happened after the exam resumed.
