Quake relief worker commits suicide
A QUAKE relief worker in Beichuan County, Sichuan Province, jumped to his death after apparently suffering depression related to the 2008 massive earthquake.
Wei Hong was a relief worker in the epicenter of the quake in 2009 who had lost several family members. He jumped off a hospital building to his death after a medical check on May 21, only nine months after he took his job, Southern Metropolis Weekly reported today.
The day he died was the earthquake's two-year anniversary in the Chinese lunar calendar, which is commonly used in Beichuan. The incident sparked concern over the mental state of earthquake survivors.
Wei is the third official in Beichuan County to kill himself, allegedly related to post-earthquake stress. But his coworkers said he appeared normal and had dinner with them the night before, singing one of his favorite karaoke songs.
Wei's coworkers at Beichuan agricultural authority said the 34-year-old was always quiet but responsible at work.
His former boss Zhao Qizhou said the medical checks may have found a health threat, but doctors had not began running tests before he died, the report said.
In his workplace in Yuli Township, vice head Wang Pifang said Wei changed a lot after the earthquake in which he lost his uncle, niece and several other family members.
Wang said he used to be a very lively person and had never left Yuli town in his life before he was transferred to Beichuan. In the earthquake, 283 people died and 1,260 were injured in his hometown.
Wei liked drinking before, but after the earthquake became seriously alcoholic, according to Wang.
