Quarry fined over lake pollution

A STONE quarry in Anhui Province has been fined 200,000 yuan (US$29,412) for discharging waste water into Chao Lake, the province's largest lake.

Kaiyuan Stone Material Factory in Chaohu City discharged about 10,000 tons of waste water from washing sand into the lake every day, turning the lake yellow, Anhui-based Xin'an Evening News reported today.

The factory failed to obtain an environmental impact assessment before starting work, the report said. It also did not have a license to wash sand, according to the city's Environmental Protection Bureau.

A large area of lake water was polluted and turned from green to yellow, according to the report.

Chao Lake lies between Chaohu and Hefei cities, and is one of China's five largest freshwater lakes.
