Qvod chief denies accusations of spreading pornographic content

Chinese online video service provider Qvod’s Chief Executive Wang Xin denied charges of spreading violent and pornographic contents on the Internet at today’s hearing in Beijing.

Shenzhen-based Qvod Technology Co Ltd developed popular video player Qvod in 2012. Wang and other three executives of the company, Wu Ming, Zhang Kedong and Niu Wenju, allowed users to post, download and play porn videos that went viral on the Internet, prosecutors said.

In November 2013, investigators found over 70 percent of the 29,841 video clips stored on Qvod’s servers had pornographic contents. The four executives were detained for spreading pornography.

Huang Yong, who represented the company at the trial, said the company had always involved in technical research and development.

“Bad contents exist on the Internet. Whatever the contents, they can be opened and displayed. It’s common phenomenon in the industry,” Wang said, “We know individual users may use the player to watch porn videos. So we have a filtering and reporting system to curb it.”

The Haidian District People’s Court is still hearing the case.
