Rabies kills hero father
A FATHER who sucked blood from a dog bite on his son’s leg has died of rabies, after refusing to get precautionary vaccines due to the cost.
The 41-year-old, surnamed Jiang, from Sitong County in eastern Jiangsu Province, had also thought he was unlikely to contract the disease, Yangzi Evening News reported yesterday.
A course of rabies shots costs around 600 yuan (US$98).
His son, in his early 20s, was bitten on the left leg by a stray dog on August 29 while sweeping in front of his home.
Jiang was so anxious that he sucked blood from the wound and spat it out — as is often portrayed as a treatment for bites from venomous snakes.
While his son was taken to hospital and received rabies shots, Jiang refused to get the same treatment, as he was concerned about the cost.
Fellow villagers said he also thought it unlikely that he would be infected by rabies through the mouth and considered it too much trouble to get the shots.
However, Jiang developed symptoms of rabies on Monday and died hours after being admitted to hospital.
Doctors said in the event of a dog bite, the wound should be cleaned with soapy water and medical help sought immediately.
