Race to rescue off-roaders

RESCUERS are trying to reach seven members of an off-road club who were trapped by rising waters in the Taklamakan Desert in northwest China.

Rescuers on motorcycles have been dispatched with food to where five men and two women have been stranded for nearly four days near Qarqan River, said a spokesman for Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region's Ruoqiang County.

Melting snow has led to the sudden rise of the river's water level and trapped the group, one of them told local authorities via satellite phone on March 6, China News Service reported.

So far, rescuers have not been able to get close to the group because of the difficult terrain. A first team came within 100 kilometers of where the group got trapped on Sunday night, but the floods forced them to retreat.

The group set out from Beijing to cross the Taklamakan Desert on February 10.

At first they drove four jeeps, but had to abandon three that broke down on the journey.
