Raid nets smuggling suspects
CHINESE police have detained 11 people allegedly involved in the smuggling of used clothes in the southern Guangdong Province, an official said yesterday.
Officers with the public security authorities, customs and industry and commercial administrations raided more than 500 workshops and warehouses in Jieshi Town, Lufeng City.
Nearly 300 illegal sites were dismantled and more than 140 tons of used clothes were seized after they had been smuggled into China, according to Chen Zengxin, secretary of the Lufeng Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China.
Five vehicles were also confiscated, he said.
A crackdown that began in early October has so far netted more than 120 tons of smuggled clothing.
Police investigations showed that used clothes, smuggled from countries such as Japan and the Republic of Korea, have been sold to many regions on Chinese mainland.
