Rail dormitory collapse kills nine

NINE people have been killed, four are missing and 21 others injured after a dormitory collapsed this morning in Jiangsu Province near a construction site for the high-speed Shanghai-Nanjing rail link.

Most of the victims are workers on the rail link and the building was rented by the construction company.

Rescuers are still searching for the four missing workers.

A source from a Suzhou newspaper told Shanghai Daily that the collapse was believed to have been caused by a gas explosion in a building used for storing food.

The collapse occurred at 7am at Danyang, near Nanjing, the source said.

The Jiangsu authority said nine people were pronounced dead after being taken to hospital and another 21 are still being treated.

The Shanghai-Nanjing Express Rail is expected to be completed and running before next May, in time for the World Expo in Shanghai.

Its terminus will be inside the Hongqiao Integrated Traffic Hub near Hongqiao Airport.

The Shanghai-Nanjing express line will provide the most efficient and convenient railway access to major cities in Jiangsu and Shanghai.

The integrated traffic hub will open before World Expo next year and it will also connect to Pudong International Airport with Metro Line 2.
