Rail services can now ban smokers
CHINA’S rail service operators have been given the official green light to impose a travel ban on passengers who are caught smoking on high-speed trains a second time, The Beijing News reported.
Passengers who are caught smoking in carriages will be required to sign a written promise to never repeat the offense. If they commit the offence a second time they will be banned.
The China Railway Corporation’s Transportation Bureau has issued the notice to every regional operator, and it is up to them whether or not they implement it, the paper reported.
Some regional operators already penalize repeat offenders, which has proved effective in curbing onboard smoking, Shanghai Railway Bureau said, so it will not be implementing the ban.
According to the railway safety management rules, passengers who smoke on board can be fined from 500 yuan (US$75) to 2,000 yuan.
