MORE than 11.6 million trips were made on Saturday, the first day of the three-day Tomb-sweeping Day holiday, up 11.1 percent year on year, the China Railway Corporation said Sunday.
Nearly half of the trips were by bullet train, thanks to the rapid development of China's high-speed rail network, the company said.
Passenger flow is expected to hit 8.8 million on Sunday. In order to guarantee all passengers reach their destinations, 433 more trains will be put into service, the company said.
China has 17,000 kilometers of high-speed rail covering much of the country.
Railway authorities have temporarily prolonged the operating time for online ticketing systems and travelers can check vacant seat information and book tickets at www.12306.cn half an hour before departure time, according to the company.
The Tomb-sweeping Day holiday, which lasts from Saturday to Monday, is the most important occasion for Chinese to honor their ancestors.
