Railway operator refuses to compensate accident victims

GUANGZHOU Railway Group said they were not responsible for the train accident on Sunday in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province which killed two men and injured two others, and it would not compensate the victims.

The railway company said the four men from Gansu Province crossed the fence and were walking along the Guangzhou-Shenzhen track when the train hit them. Their conduct violated China's Regulation on Traffic Safety of Railways.

Lei Hongliang, who was seriously injured in the accident, told the local News Express that he and three friends were going to a village after dinner and they decided to cross the fence to take a shortcut.

As soon as they crossed the fence and climbed up the elevated railway, a train approached and knocked them out. Two died instantly at the scene.

A local resident told the newspaper that the fence was only 1.2 meters tall and very easy to cross.

Another wounded victim said they often took this shortcut because trains rarely run on this track and no one had ever stopped them for crossing the fence.
