Railway services getting back to normal

ALTHOUGH there are still some traffic-flow problems in Liaoning after Typhoon Damrey tore through the northeast province, major railways were operating again yesterday.

Suspended rail services along three major lines through Liaoning - Shenyang-Dalian, Shenyang-Shanhaiguan, and Shenyang-Dandong - were back in service by noon after more than 30 hours' repair work, rail authorities said. The Shenyang-Shanhaiguan line, a section of the Beijing-Harbin link, is a major route linking Beijing with northeastern provinces.

Bullet trains between Beijing and Shenyang, Liaoning's capital, were back in service, while other trains were expected to resume gradually, the Shenyang Railway Bureau said.

Highway traffic was also seriously affected by flooding. Traffic-flow on 24 major trunk highways, 36 county-level highways and 176 rural roads had been disrupted as of 6am but was almost back to normal on the Shenyang-Dalian and Shenyang-Dandong expressways after 4,500 workers were sent to assist in rescues and repairs.
