Rain, snow ease drought

RAIN and snow fell across China's eastern and central regions over the past two days, with temperatures plummeting up to 10 degrees Celsius, easing a severe drought that has plagued a vast swath of farmland in northern China.

But snow paralyzed traffic in Beijing, Shanxi and Inner Mongolia.

"Rain and snow will be heavy (through today), playing a positive role in relieving long-lasting drought in parts of Henan and Anhui provinces," a weather website (weather.com.cn) quoted meteorologist Li Xiaoquan as saying.

While the drought had eased, it was still affecting 6.75 million hectares of wheat growing areas as of Thursday.

In Beijing, 25 flights were canceled and 60 flights were delayed at least 60 minutes due to snow.

Some expressways were closed in both Shanxi and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region due to snow.

Heavy snow was forecast in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi and Hebei yesterday, according to the national meteorological center.

Shandong, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces were likely to receive heavy rain yesterday. The center also warned that colder temperatures could create icy roads.
