Rain sparks deadly slide
AT least 10 people were killed and 22 others are missing after a rain-triggered landslide buried mountain-side factories in the northwestern Shaanxi Province, local officials said yesterday.
By yesterday evening, rescuers had retrieved 10 bodies from beneath the rocks and mud, according to Zhu Zhisheng, vice mayor of the provincial capital of Xi'an.
Five injured are in stable condition in hospital, he said.
The landslide took place about 2pm on Saturday.
About 100,000 cubic meters of rock and mud tumbled down the mountain, engulfing a brick factory and destroying part of a nearby ceramics factory in a suburban district of Xi'an.
Rescuers found four bodies on Saturday night and six more yesterday.
More than 700 police, firefighters and residents have joined rescue efforts.
Rescuers were hampered by three subsequent slides yesterday morning as heavy rains continued to pound the city. Another 10,000 cubic meters of rock and mud roared toward the site, forcing rescuers to suspend their operation.
Heavy downpours across the province caused havoc in other areas.
Rainfall over Saturday night triggered another landslide that buried a house in the suburban district of Jintai in Baoji City, about 175 kilometers west of Xi'an.
