Rainstorm floods Dazu County, wrecks 570 houses
MORE than 5,000 people in Dazu County, west China's Chongqing Municipality were stranded in floods on June 21 and 22 as a rainstorm caused 570 houses to collapse and inundated 6,333 hectares of local farmland, Chongqing Evening Post reported today.
The rainstorm dumped 176.4mm of rainwater in two days, flooding roads and villages in the county. A local government official told the newspaper that a bridge in Yongxi Town was washed away by surging torrents and some areas were two to three meters under water.
Most of the stranded people had been brought to safety by yesterday morning. Local authorities estimated that more than 142,000 Dazu County residents were affected by the floods, which caused direct economic losses of up to 160 million yuan.
