Rainstorm topples West Lake pavilion

Heavy thunderstorms lashed Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province this afternoon, causing Jixian Pavilion, a sightseeing spot on the West Lake, to fall down.

The pavilion collapsed around 1pm when its four wooden pillars could not withstand the storms and snapped. They fell into the lake, leaving the tiled roof and rubbles on the ground.

Four people taking shelter in the pavilion rushed out in time and no one was hurt.

Chen Zhihua, official with the West Lake management authority, said there were only four people in the pavilion when it fell down because most people took shelter in nearby buildings.

He said the pillars weren't rotten as they were checked every month. It was wind gusts that destroyed the pavilion.

A score of grand old trees also suffered damages in the rainstorms. Some were uprooted.
