Rainstorms bring devastation
NEARLY a million people have been affected by heavy rain that caused houses to collapse, decimated crops and blocked highways in several Chinese provinces,.
Continuous storms have affected 360,700 people from 14 counties, districts and cities in central China’s Hubei Province since Wednesday, officials at the provincial civil affairs department said.
As of 2pm yesterday, about 36,950 hectares of farmland had been damaged and 145 houses have collapsed.
Wuhan, Hubei’s capital, was inundated yesterday with more than 100 millimeters of rain in the downtown area, the city’s flood control and drought relief headquarters said.
The city’s public transport had been disrupted and the local weather bureau was warning of more heavy rain today.
The provincial government has allocated a fund worth 138 million yuan (US$22 million) to help those affected.
In the neighboring Hunan Province, more than 9,000 people have been relocated since a rainstorm that began on Wednesday.
The rain, exceeding 250mm in certain places, has affected 361,000 residents and damaged 19,800 hectares of farmland, provincial officials said.
Four people died and another five are missing after downpours hit Liancheng County in the southeastern Fujian Province early on Wednesday, inundating streets and cutting off power supplies.
Longyan, which administers Liancheng, reported 3,200 collapsed houses. More than 323,000 people were affected, it said, with 136,200 of them evacuated.
Torrential rain has also hit the southern province of Guangdong, affecting 233,200 people and forcing the evacuation of more than 6,200.
