Ransom hijacker arrested after setting car on fire

POLICE yesterday caught a man who hijacked a car and kept the woman driver and her son hostage in downtown Xiamen, a seaside city in Fujian Province.

The 33-year-old man surnamed Wang hijacked a BMW sedan before a red light yesterday afternoon and locked the woman and her son inside. He threatened to set a bottle of gasoline on fire if they refused to give him 500,000 yuan (US$77,597), local news website Xmnn.cn reported today.

Police arrived after residents reported they saw the boy hitting the car windows.

Police stopped the car and the woman and her son managed to escape just when Wang was setting the car on fire. Both Wang and the woman were injured.

Police are still investigating the case.
