Rape victim's shame plastered across town
A RAPE victim is seeking an investigation into the public leak of a detailed police interview after she was raped two years ago.
Dozens of copies of the seven-page document were posted across her hometown in a north China county and made known every details of her shame to nearly all the population in the small town, today's China Youth Daily reported.
"My son remained silent after learning it and walked across town in tears trying to collect back all the copies for me," 49-year-old Zhang Liping told the newspaper.
Zhang, a native of Quzhou County in Hebei Province's Handan City, said she reported the rape to police in Handan's Congtai District in March 2008. She described the full details of the assault by the former Party secretary of Quzhou's Henantong Town, but police assured her the record would remain secret.
The Party official asked her to withdraw the lawsuit a month later and threatened to publish the police account of her case, but she refused.
"I felt like I'd been stripped naked in public," Zhang said. She nearly collapsed and had attempted to commit suicide, the report said.
Zhang said she has asked local police, prosecutors and disciplinary supervisory authorities for an investigation into the leak but received no response so far.
Congtai police refused to comment on the leak to China Youth Daily.
In December last year, Handan's Congtai District People's Court sentenced the official to four years behind bars for raping Zhang after Zhang got drunk.
Law experts suggested the police record could have been leaked during the investigation. If true, police in charge of the case should shoulder responsibility for the leak, according to Professor Sun Yanshan with Hebei Normal University's Law and Politics School.
