Raped woman kills newborn baby

AN unmarried young woman killed her son after giving birth in a factory toilet in central China's Hunan Province to prevent her colleagues finding out she was raped.

The 23-year-old surnamed Chen is in police custody, but police didn't reveal whether or how she would be punished, today's Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported.

Chen allegedly told police she was raped in her hometown in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province last February, the report said.

She didn't realize she was pregnant until four months later, so she missed the best chance for an abortion. To hide her pregnancy from friends and family, she left her hometown and went to work at a factory in Hunan's Xiangtan City in June.

On December 11, she gave birth in the factory toilet. Fearing she might lose her job if the baby was discovered, she killed him with scissors and dumped the body in a trash can. She then returned to work, the report said.

Passers-by discovered the baby's body and called police, who caught Chen three days later.

Officers sent her to a hospital for treatment and donated more than 5,000 yuan (US$732) to cover her medical costs.
