Rare deer die after water cuts at zoo

THREE endangered red deer have died at a central China zoo where water supply has been cut for four days in the scorching summer.

The deer as well as nine others arrived at the Changsha Ecological Zoo in Muyun Town of Changsha City, Hunan Province's capital, in mid May from Changchun City, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, today's Changsha Evening News reported.

Temperatures in Changsha hit over 38 degrees Celsius last week, stressing animals from cooler habitats, the zoo's expert Wang Qing told the newspaper.

The deer are more suited to temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees, he said.

Zoo officials said the water company is now repairing the network to ensure drinking water supply to the animals.

The zoo's higher altitude and distant location in Changsha's supply network made it hard to pump water due to low pressure, said water company official Li Dai.

Heat waves will continue to dominate north and south China this week with up to 40 degrees in parts of Hebei Province, central Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Fujian Province, according to the National Meteorological Center.
