Rare sighting of Manchurian leopard reported in Jilin
A wild Manchurian leopard, also known as Amur leopard, was spotted recently by an automatic infrared camera hidden in a forest in northeast Jilin Province. It's the first time for China to snap images of the near-extinct feline predator with an infrared camera.
Experts of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) confirmed that the animal in the photos was a Manchurian leopard. The photos were taken at 1:30pm on September 19 in a forest in Wangqing County.
Manchurian leopard is the most endangered species of big cats in the world. According to Zhu Chunquan, a WWF official in China, the total population of Manchurian leopards is only about one-tenth of Siberian tigers.
Experts estimate the number of wild Manchurian leopards in the Changbai Mountains is around 10 to 20. The photos suggest there might be independent colony of the rare leopards in Wangqing County.
