Rare storks poisoned to death by poachers

THE number of slaughtered Oriental storks, a protected bird species in China, has risen to 21 after volunteers found eight more dead storks near a reservoir in Tianjin, north China.

Highly poisonous pesticides were found in three reed-surrounded ponds about 1,500 meters away from the wetland close to the reservoir, which is a winter habitat for some migrating birds, the Beijing News reported today.

Wildlife protection volunteers were removing poachers' nets on Sunday morning when they spotted a flock of 30 large, white birds with black wing feathers standing dazed and motionless. They found 13 dead birds and 13 poison-numbed birds.

Due to habitat loss and overhunting, the Oriental Stork has been classified as an endangered species by the World Conservation Union. There are only 2,500 to 3,000 such wading birds in China.

An autopsy is under way and the result will be published on the website of the State Forestry Administration.

The volunteers suspect some poachers used poisoned bait to kill the birds and sell them to restaurants.
