Razzano upsets Kuznetsova

Virginie Razzano of France stunned two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova with a 6-4, 6-2 win in the first round of the Southern California Open on Monday in Carlsbad.

Razzano, who needed a wild card to gain entry to the main draw, is ranked No. 131 in the world. Kuznetsova, who won the 2004 US Open and the 2009 French Open, is 29th.

Razzano used a superior serve to control the match.

Former US Open champion Sam Stosur of Australia beat Varvara Lepchenko 7-5, 6-1 in another first round match.

The fifth-seeded Stosur needed 1 hour, 28 minutes to beat the American after struggling through the opening set.

Stosur took advantage of Lepchenko’s first serve, winning 53 percent of those points and breaking her five times.

The 13th-ranked Stosur was granted a wild card after losing to Olga Govortsova last week in the opening round of the Bank of the West Classic.

Francesca Schiavone, the 2010 French Open champion, defeated Italian countrywoman Flavia Pennetta, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 6-4 in a first-round match that lasted 2 hours and 58 minutes.

Jelena Jankovic, the sixth seed, of Serbia defeated American Lindsay Burdette 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a night match.
