Real estate firm breaks Chairman Mao statue
THE local government of a south China city has ordered a real estate developer to make an apology after it tore down a statue of the late Chairman Mao Zedong, founder of the People's Republic of China, in a construction project.
The accident, which happened in Wenchang City in Hainan Province, caused an outcry among netizens, after pictures of the broken statue were circulated online.
The developer explained the statue was accidentally knocked down due to workers' negligent handling while they were trying to relocate it to a park, China News Service reported yesterday.
The Wenchang government criticized the developer, Hainan Yilong Urban Construction Investment Co Ltd, for its poor supervision and organization, and ordered it to improve internal management and make a public apology as soon as possible.
The 9.9-meter-high, 56-ton marble statue broke into pieces when the workers tried to relocate it to a park on February 19. The area where the statue used to stand was bought by Hainan Yilong, which will turn it into a five-star hotel, the report said.
The developer had discussed the relocation of the statue with the local government before the project started. The original plan was to move it to a government building, but due to space limitations, it was to be temporarily moved to a local park, said Yao Liqi, a manager at Hainan Yilong.
The developer assigned the contractor, Wenchang Construction Engineering Co Ltd, to carry out the demolition of the building that occupied the site, including the relocation of the statue of Chairman Mao.
The contractor assigned some 30 workers to clean up the statue's debris after it fell down. "But due to respect for Chairman Mao, no one dared to collect the pieces," said Yang Yan, the project manager.
Yang said the contractor was responsible for knocking down the statue and they were willing to build another.
