Real estate firm license revoked over thug attack
AUTHORITIES in Shanxi Province have stripped a real estate company of its license, after its staff tried to demolish a residential building where people still live.
Police have detained six managers from Jiashun Real Estate Development Company alleged to be involved in the forcible demolition in Datong City, China News Service reported yesterday.
Datong City Mayor Geng Yanbo promised to "seriously punish" the managers as they were a bad influence, and pledged to protect the interests of the residents.
Jiashun was also asked to quit the construction project.
More than 200 people in camouflage jackets, wielding iron bars and hammers and wearing helmets raided a residential building in the city at 1am on Tuesday.
Some 78 families live in the building, Bai Qinglan, one of the residents, told China News Service.
The heavies blocked the doors of residents and began smashing windows.
"Stay inside, otherwise we will kill you," Bai claimed the attackers shouted. Terrified residents called the police.
The thugs fled when officers arrived 10 minutes later, she added.
Bai said residents were left frightened and angry.
They blocked a section of Weidu Road near their building in protest at 6am the same day. Government officials arrived and persuaded them to leave.
The building is earmarked for demolition under a city government renovation plan. Forty-two families who lived there have moved out, but the remaining 78 households refused to accept the compensation offer and decided to remain in the building.
