Rebuild hutong, firm told

A real estate development firm that destroyed the courtyard residence of a famous Chinese architect in downtown Beijing is being held legally liable for its action, authorities said.

Fuheng Real Estate, a subsidiary of China Resources, has been ordered to restore the courtyard, said Kong Fanzhi, director of the Beijing Administration of Cultural Heritage. The brick-and-tile compound in Beizongbu Hutong was listed by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage in 2009.

Its destruction was "a crime and a blatant damage to cultural relics," Kong told the Beijing News.

The courtyard was once the home of Liang Sicheng, recognized as the "father of modern Chinese architecture" and his wife, Lin Huiyin, also an accomplished architect and scholar during the 1930s. It was bulldozed last month.

The developer said it dismantled it for the purpose of better preservation, an excuse that drew strong condemnation from the public.

Police have looked into the demolition, which was not approved by the cultural heritage authorities, the report said.
