Reckless driving spree ends with one dead in Haikou
ONE person was killed when a driver ploughed into seven vehicles in Haikou, capital of Hainan Province, Guangzhou Daily reported.
The driver surnamed Chen tried to flee the scene twice and even threatened traffic police officers by telling them he was a National People's Congress member, the report said.
Haikou police reported on Wednesday that Chen, 31, was not drunk at the time of the incident. But Chen reportedly told officers that he hadn't slept that day.
He is under criminal detention, the report said.
Officers also told the newspaper that Chen was not a NPC member. Chen is the former deputy Party chief of Haikou Worker Cultural Palace, but now owns a commercial company, the report said.
According to police, Chen first hit two vehicles on Tuesday morning. He didn't stop and smashed into another car, which was waiting at a red light, killing the driver instantly, the report said. Chen crashed into four other cars before he eventually stopped.
Chen claimed he was a NPC member and knew some police officials when officers arrived at the scene.
"I'm a NPC member. If you dare arrest me today, you will be fired tomorrow," the newspaper quoted Chen as saying when threatening traffic police.
According to the law, NPC members at county level or higher can't be arrested or placed on trial without the permission of the People's Congress of that level.
In similar cases, people in trouble with the law have claimed to be NPC members to scare off police officers although the deception seldom works, the report said.
