Record lottery win goes to 'middle-aged man'
THE winner of a record lottery jackpot of 514 million yuan (US$79.8 million) has been revealed to be an unidentified middle-aged man from east China's Zhejiang Province, according to local media.
Wang Beijun, owner of a lottery booth in Xinchang, Zhejiang Province, said the man bought tickets for the China Welfare Lottery's Union Lotto, also known as "two-colored ball," Tuesday afternoon, -according to local website Shaoxing.com.cn.
It probably did not occur to the buyer that just hours after he handed over 200 yuan for the tickets, he would turn out to be China's largest lottery winner, surpassing a teacher in central China's Henan Province who scooped 359.9 million yuan last year.
Wang said the man wanted 100 identical two-colored ball tickets but the booth operator made a mistake and gave him only 50. He quickly made good the error.
Wang said judging from his accent the man might be a Xinchang local, and might be a first-time lottery player as he has never seen him during the seven years he has been running his booth.
All the man's tickets hit the seven winning numbers drawn on Tuesday night.
Ticket holders need to pick a total of seven numbers from two separate pools of balls - six different numbers (red balls) from 1 to 33, and one number (blue ball) from 1 to 16. The top prize goes to the ticket that matches all seven numbers drawn.
Each ticket costs 2 yuan.
