Record rainfall submerges Tongcheng, stranding 60,000 people

TONGCHENG County in central Hubei Province was flooded by a record downpour that lasted nine hours until 5am today, stranding more than 60,000 residents and cutting off power supply, telecommunications and traffic, Xinhua reported.

All across Hubei, rains and floods since last night have killed 18 people and injured at least 100, provincial officials said. Most of the deaths and injuries were caused by collapsed buildings and burst dams and dykes.

Local flood control and relief office said the precipitation reached 300mm within four hours, a record volume in 200 years.

The entire county was submerged in floodwater this morning. In some low-lying areas, the floodwater is more than 2 meters deep.

Traffic was paralyzed in the main town of the county where floodwater was 60cm to 90cm deep on the roads. Flood also cut off power supply and telecommunications service in Tongcheng.

The county government said that as of 8am today more than 50,000 residents had been evacuated to safer places and flood damages are still being assessed.
