Red Cross official arraigned on corruption charges

AN award-winning Red Cross official was put on trial in south China's Yunnan Province for embezzling 56,000 yuan (US$8,668), Guangzhou Daily reported today.

Ruan Heng, former vice president of the Kunming Branch of the Red Cross Society of China in Kunming, the provincial capital, was charged with corruption at a district court on Friday.

She allegedly abused her position from 2006 to 2007 for personal gains and used the receipts of her clothes, shoes, cigarettes and alcohol for reimbursement with public money.

Ruan pleaded guilty but said she bought those items to facilitate her work, insisting that the money involved came from government budget, instead of public donations.
