Red River development gets axe
A SHOPPING and entertainment complex in Yunnan Province that opened just three years ago is being demolished, an official said yesterday.
The development in Hekou County, on the banks of the Red River, cost 270 million yuan (US$43.4 million) to build and opened in 2011, a spokesperson for the county government was quoted as saying by the Oriental Morning Post.
The decision to pull it down was taken by the provincial government, which wanted to “return the riverbank to the people,” the spokesperson said.
The development was so overcrowded that it “severely damaged” the local landscape and created an environmental hazard, the report said.
Demolition work got under way on May 23 and is expected to take a year to complete, it said.
A possible stumbling block, however, is that 90 percent of the business owners have yet to move out as they are in negotiations over compensation.
The site has 150 stores, and about 50 bars and restaurants, the report said.
How much compensation each gets will be decided at a hearing, it said.
