Red ribbon gives hint to baby smugglers

A newborn boy was robbed from his mother in a village in Langfang, north China's Hebei Province last week and police are still hunting for three suspects.

A woman and a man entered the house of Wang Meili last Thursday afternoon and grabbed the two-month-old boy from her, police said.

Wang cried as she struggled to catch the strangers but she was pushed to the ground. The two baby snatchers then ducked into a van waiting outside Wang's house and left.

The bereft mother told police that she opened the door after hearing knocks and the two strangers came in asking for money. Feeling scared, she gave them all the cash and valuables she could find in the house, but they still grabbed the baby from her.

Police said it is a local custom for a household to hang a red ribbon on their door to celebrate the birth of a child. The ribbon might have drawn the notice of a baby-trafficking ring. Police now offer 5,000 yuan (US$788) for clues leading to the arrest of the baby snatchers.
