Reduction in Mid-Autumn Festival gifts sparks strikes

ABOUT 16,000 workers at two subsidiaries of Taiwan-based touch-screen-maker Wintek Corp went on strike over holiday benefits this week in southern China.

A Wintek executive said the strikes began on Tuesday at Dongguan Masstop Liquid Crystal Display Co and spread on Wednesday to Wintek (China) Technology Ltd.

Each factory employs about 8,000 workers, the executive said.

The strikes ended on Wednesday and yesterday, respectively, and the company did not expect production to be affected, he said.

Six police vehicles were parked in the rain outside the gates of the Wintek factory in an industrial estate in the southern city of Dongguan yesterday, though there were no workers in sight.

A manager surnamed Wu said: “Things have been settled now. The workers are back to work.”

The strikers blocked roads outside the factory on Tuesday, a day after they received much lower bonuses for the Mid-Autumn Festival than expected.

Workers said recruitment advertisements offered cash bonuses equal to half of their monthly base salary on three festivals: the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and Spring Festival.

A worker surnamed Zhang — who earns about 3,000 yuan a month with overtime — said that last year, each worker was paid 700 yuan (US$114) in cash and given a box of mooncakes.

But this year they received just 100 yuan, a chicken leg and a banana.

“The benefits promised in the advertisements must be met, or we will continue our strike,” Zhang said.

A manager surnamed Lin at Dongguan Masstop said the benefits are not part of the labor contracts and are, therefore, not fixed.
