Re-education verdict upheld
A COURT has upheld a verdict sentencing three women to re-education through labor for a year after they were convicted of refusing to pay a 1 yuan (15 US cents) bus fare in Beijing two years ago.
Wu Chandi, Zhu Yumei and Lu Juhua, residents of Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, were detained by police in July 2010 for forcibly boarding a No. 14 bus in Beijing, refusing to pay the fare and causing the bus to be delayed in June 2009, New Express Daily reported yesterday. They were later found guilty and sentenced to re-education through labor for a year.
The women went to Beijing to lodge an official complaint with the central govermnent.
However, Wu said the sentence was simply retaliation because she frequently went to Beijing to file complaints. She added the police investigation came a year after the incident. All three claimed they paid the bus fare.
Their request to check their transportation card records was denied by the police, who said the records had already been cleared. The transportation company also refused to provide videotape, saying the cameras on the bus didn't have a recording function, according to the report.
