Referee suspended after swim result mix-up

THE chief referee of a swimming tournament in southwest China's Sichuan Province has been sacked after a mix-up in results that sparked suspicions of cheating.

Sichuan Education Bureau is investigating last Saturday's games for the province's high school students after Netizens queried unreasonably fast speeds for some students, today's Xinmin Evening News reported.

One girl surnamed Tao finished the 50-meter breast-stroke in 31 seconds and another girl surnamed Tao in 31.17 seconds, compared with the world record of 29.8 seconds set by American swimmer Jessica Hardy.

A boy surnamed Zhang finished the 50-meter freestyle in 3.09 seconds, "even faster than a porpoise," said one Internet user.

The education authority's investigation found the girls swam freestyle but the results were misreported as breast-stroke.

"We shouldn't punish the students for the referees' mistakes," an unidentified education official said.

The chief referee Yang Zhanjia was removed from his post.
