Refinery blaze

A FIRE broke out at a PetroChina refinery and petrochemical plant northwestern province of Gansu yesterday but was extinguished with no casualties reported. The plant, near Lanzhou City, is one of the country’s oil refining hubs. It operates at a crude refining capacity of just over 200,000 barrels per day and also an affiliated petrochemical complex. Initial investigations showed the fire, which broke out shortly before 8.40am, was triggered by a leak of propylene at a 300,000 tonne-per-year air separation unit, the Gansu provincial government said. The fire was extinguished at 1:45pm, it said.
