Reforms to encourage tourism in rural areas
CHINA is to introduce reforms to boost investment and consumption in the tourism industry, the State Council said yesterday.
Tourism development is significant in fostering the country’s service sector, increasing employment and improving people’s livelihoods, according to a statement released after a meeting chaired by Premier Li Keqiang.
The meeting urged support for the construction of regional airports, roads to scenic spots, parking lots and washrooms in tourist destinations, especially in less-developed central and western China.
Tourism products focusing on rural areas will be supported, the meeting said, and the government will encourage college graduates and migrant workers who have returned to home villages to start their own tourism businesses as a way to alleviate rural poverty.
The meeting also approved a draft law on domestic violence. A bill, China’s first on domestic violence, was published last November for public comment.
The draft announced yesterday defines clear-cut responsibilities for different social groups to prevent domestic violence, including government, social organizations, communities, schools and medical institutions.
It empowers social organizations and individuals to dissuade, prevent and report abuse within families.
It also requires the police to intervene immediately once such reports are filed.
According to the All-China Women’s Federation, nearly 25 percent of Chinese women have suffered domestic violence in their marriages.
