Rejected candidate sues institute over tuberculosis

A man sued a branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences for allegedly denying his admission because he was diagnosed with tuberculosis, a court in south China's Guangdong Province heard yesterday.

The man, Xu Ming, in central China's Hubei Province said he passed the written test and the interview for a graduate program at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry under the Chinese Academy of Sciences in April. But the institute denied his admission on the ground that his physical test showed he had tuberculosis, the local Yangcheng Evening News reported.

The plaintiff asked the Tianhe People's Court to convict the institute of employment discrimination.

A lawyer representing the institute said the man also failed to meet other admission requirements besides his physical condition. To prove that no discrimination was involved, the lawyer said the institute had accepted another candidate with tuberculosis.
The court didn't reach a verdict yesterday.
