Rejected suitor killer executed

A MAN who raped and killed a young woman who turned down his marriage proposal was executed yesterday in Zhaotong City in southwest China's Yunnan Province, according to the local court.
Li Changkui, aged 29, also killed the three-year-old brother of the woman.
He was executed after the Supreme Court approved the death penalty for him.
Li pled guilty to raping 19-year-old Wang Jiafei before killing her and her brother, Wang Jiahong, in the village of Yingge, in Yunnan Province, in May 2009.
The Yunnan Provincial Higher People's Court sentenced Li to death in August. Five months earlier the same court sentenced him to death with a two-year reprieve, causing public outcry as it was considered too lenient.
Li choked Wang Jiafei and caused her to pass out in Zhaotong on May 16, 2009. He raped Wang and murdered her by striking her head with a hoe. Then Li dashed her brother against an iron door.
A year ago, a lower court handed down a death sentence for Li. But in an appeal in March the provincial court considered that was ruled too harsh. That sparked outrage, prompting the review.
