Relatives of mall fire victims compensated

FAMILIES of 19 victims killed in a 12-hour fire that engulfed a shopping mall in northeast China's Jinlin Province have received at least 250,000 yuan (US$37,600) each in compensation from government.

The relatives of those killed in the November 5 fire in Chuanying District, Jilin City, told reporters that they received the money through the bank on Tuesday, City Evening News reported today.

Families of each victim whose body was cremated before November 11 received an extra 10,000 yuan, said Ma Xin. His wife Zu Guang was among the 19 victims.

A shoe making company, Jilin Dafuhao, whose six employees died in the fire in the Jilin Commercial Building, offered 100,000 yuan in relief for each victim family.

Most relatives of the dead said they were satisfied with the compensation.

Fourteen people, including the mall's managers, safety supervisors, welders and security guards of the five-storey building were detained on suspicion of connection with the deadly fire.

The cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed, but initial investigation showed short circuit and flawed building design are to blame.
