Relatives suspended in orchard dispute
IN a compensation dispute involving villagers in a north China county, relatives who work in government departments have been suspended until they can persuade the villagers to sign compensation deals, it has been claimed.
An orchard covering 180 mu (12 hectares) in Daizhuang Village, Lixian County in Hebei Province, has been fenced off and a factory producing vehicle parts held a ground-breaking ceremony on June 18, China News Service reported yesterday.
However, villagers were unaware of the transaction until they saw construction work start and several were detained after a protest on May 6.
According to sources in the Lixian County government, the villagers were due to receive 20 million yuan (US$3 million) compensation, but that was lowered to 12 million, the report said.
The orchard is to be part of the 10 square kilometer Lixian High-Tech Industrial Park.
Family members working in government agencies and schools were suspended until the villagers signed the deal, the report said.
"They were using my sons' jobs to threaten me," a villager called Wang Yan was quoted as saying. Wang had tried to keep his 3-mu plot of land, but gave in as his sons worked in county government departments.
The industrial park was an important initiative for the county to transform its economic structure, Shan Zhihe, deputy county chief, told China News Service.
However, Shan admitted that the land had been occupied before permissions were granted, and that the application process was still on going.
